The students at the school have written essays about what patriotism means to them, the 5th graders have put together a musical, a flag that was flown in Iraq will be presented to the school and a local service member who is home on R&R from Iraq (who obtained the flag) is expected to be present as Sanger is his home town. This is to be the Veterans Day event for the city of Sanger. The event is scheduled to be outdoors and the PGR has been asked to show support for the kids and to show "what patriotism and veterans mean." What a great opportunity to make an impression on these young people. The Texas Veterans Commission will be hosting the event. A final itinerary for this mission will be coming soon. Thank you. The organization "Honor Flight" will be flying these veterans free of charge to Washington DC to visit the WWII memorial and see a couple of other things in Washington. Honor Flight's mission is to get as many of the WWII veterans to Washington to see their memorial as possible before they are all gone forever. It took over 60 years for the members of The Greatest Generation to have their memorial built and many are now too old and ill to make the trip and Honor Flight's mission is to take these people to see it. The entire trip is free to the veterans and paid for entirely by donations. Here's where the famous PGR dedication to veterans comes in. The bus carrying these veterans is scheduled to leave Waxahachie at 4:25 AM on Tuesday morning. We have also been asked to escort on the return trip from Love Field back to Waxahachie on Wednesday. That flight gets in to Love Field at 10:55 PM on Wednesday night. No typos - those are the correct times. Please forgive me for being a bit blunt here, but I'm going to be. With the rate at which WWII veterans are dying, approximately 1500 to 2000 a day, there is a real chance that most of us may not get to do something tangible for a WWII veteran other than attend their funeral. These people are in their 80's and above. Personally, I relish the opportunity. I am including here a couple of links. One is to an 8 minute video of an actual Honor Flight mission taking WWII veterans to DC to visit the memorial so you can see what one looks like. I think you'll enjoy it and see what this organization does and then impact it has on the veterans. It is: http://www.ohiowarstories.org/wp/?p=29 The other is the Honor Flight home page. It is: http://www.honorflight.org/ Mark and Wendy Ignersoll will be the Ride Captains for this mission and will be posting a final itinerary shortly. We will be joining the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcyclists for this mission. I hope to see you there. Sorry for the long post but since this is an unusual sort of mission for us I thought I'd take a little extra space to explain what it's about. Weather: Forecast for Wednesday is for partly cloudy and 65 degrees. Please dress accordingly and be prepared for anything. The flag/water truck will be present. This is a great opportunity to make a lasting impression on these kids, not to mention the adults. We are fortunate we were invited to participate in this event by our friends at the Veteran's Administration in Denton. The theme for the students' essay contest was "What patriotism means to me." Let's try as best we can to demonstrate for them that what they were writing about lasts a lifetime and that even the grown-ups can show patriotism and share it with them every day. This is being sent for your information and for anyone who might want to make the trip to honor this veteran and his family. I thought it was important send out this information due to the rarity of such an event, and it being so relatively close by. The Austin area PGR will be involved when Cpl. Luna arrives on 11/22/08 and then again on the date of the funeral on 11/25/08, and I'm sure would welcome the participation of all who might like to attend. Thank you. Steve Lucas Deputy State Captain North Texas PGR Soldier Missing in Action from Korean War is Identified The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the Korean War, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors. He is Cpl. Librado Luna, U.S. Army, of Taylor, Texas. He will be buried on Nov. 25 in Taylor. Representatives from the Army's Mortuary Office met with Luna's next-of-kin to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army. In late November 1950, Luna was assigned to the 8th Army Ranger Company, 25th Infantry Division, then attached to B Company, 89th Medium Tank Battalion as part of Task Force Dolvin. The 8th Army Ranger Company was deployed on Hill 205 in Kujang County along the leading edge of the U.S. position. On November 25, the Chinese Army struck in force in what would become known as the Battle of the Ch'ongch'on River. Task Force Dolvin, including the 8th Army Ranger Company, was forced to withdraw to the south. Of the 91 men from B Company, 89th Medium Tank Battalion and the 8th Army Ranger Company, only 22 made it to safety. Ten men, including Luna, went missing on November 26 near Hill 205. In 1998, a joint U.S.-Democratic People's Republic of North Korea (D.P.R.K.) team, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), excavated a burial site in Kujang County where a girl had uncovered possible American remains on a hill near her school. The site correlates with the area where members of the 8th Army Ranger Company fought as part of Task Force Dolvin. The team recovered human remains and non-biological material evidence. Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA in the identification of Luna's remains. For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1420. U.S. Department of Defense Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs) Austin PGR Announcement The following information came from one of our riders and is a little history about the circumstances surrounding Librado Luna and how he was found. This did not come from DOD, but from a nephew. Please keep Librado and his family in your prayers, and make every effort to attend the mission. Sam, I personally know this family. I've known Saul Salazar for some time. Saul is Librado Luna's nephew. He came by last night to ask if we would do this mission. I told him that you'd already sent an e-mail, and that the PGR will be there. For years, the family wondered if Librado died, or somehow integrated into the Korean society somehow. Librado was 5'4" tall and 119 pounds and could have passed for a Korean. He was small in stature, but big in heroism. His remains were discovered when some Korean school children were planting trees. They discovered bones along with American artifacts like shaving brushes and tooth brushes. Librado Luna was a PFC assigned to the 8213th Army Ranger Company (also known as the 8th Army Ranger Company). He was among a select few that attended Ranger training in the Pusan perimiter in South Korea rather than at Fort Benning. On November 25, 1950, his unit, composed of 88 men (of which 52 were Rangers), were met with an attack by over 500 Chinese soldiers. They were hit with automatic weapons and mortar fire. Wave after wave of Chinese soldiers came. The following day, November 26, 22 men made it back. Librado was not one of them. All they found was part of his right hip area. It was enough for DNA tests though. The tests showed it was him. He was MIA on 26 November 1950. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 May 1953. He was declared KIA on 31 December 1953. Now, 55 years later, the family at least has peace in knowing what happened. Saul has long told me that if his uncle were ever found, he would really want the PGR to be there. I can't even begin to explain how important the PGR presence would be to him. Thanks for listening, and you can share this info with the PGR if you wish. The interment service is scheduled to begin at DFW National Cemetery at 2:00 PM. The shelter assignment is unknown at this time but will be available at the church for those in the escort and will be posted at the visitor center at the cemetery for those joining for the services there. While the flag truck will be present at the cemetery to bring water, we will use the flags stored at the shelter at the cemetery for the service. Weather: Mostly clear with a high of 66 degrees. Flag/water truck will be present. Please note that there is a possibility of other services in progress as we are entering or leaving the cemetery so please keep bike pipe/radio/etc., noise to a minimum. Thanks. Iron Horses if you can, cages are always welcome and appreciated. Please remember that our mission is to stand tall, silent, and with honor and respect for this soldier and her family. I know I don't have to remind you (but I will) that each mission is very important, not only to us but to the families and friends touched by these losses. While this situation may stretch our resources, especially on a weekday, we have faced this situation before and the outstanding men and women of the North Texas PGR have always come through. As we do our best to honor both of these heroes and their families tomorrow I would like to urge everyone to please be safe, especially if you are travelling between the services, and please remember that we can honor no one if we don't make it to the service in the first place. I thank all of you for your continued dedication and sacrifice and I am honored that you allow me to stand in the flag line among you. Wilson of Bonham, TX has asked the PGR to participate in the services for this hero. He died during a reconnaissance mission in Iraq while saving the life of a fellow soldier who was drowning. Sgt. Wilson was successful in saving the life of the other soldier but the combination of the weight of his pack and other equipment, and the current prevented him from being able to save himself. The primary services and burial for Sgt. Wilson will be held in Killeen, TX at Fort Hood on Saturday. The Central Texas PGR will be attending to those services. A memorial service will be held in his home town of Bonham on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. These services are in our North Texas area of operations and arrangements are being handled by our good friends and colleagues from the Sherman area. A final itinerary will be posted for this mission very shortly. I have posted links below to 2 local articles about Sgt. Wilson that you might be interested in. Thank you. It is on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 9:00 AM. Their e-mail invitation says, in part: "On December 6th, The City of Richardson will be holding their Annual Christmas Parade. Soldiers' Angels has decided to participate. We will have a decorated truck with our Soldiers' Angels Flags flying, lights, etc. It is our hope that we can have more military presence at the parade. We are inviting The PGR's to ride with us. We have also invited the Paralyzed Veterans of America to participate. Some of them will be riding in the back of the truck with us, others will be pushed by volunteer high school ROTC students in formation. It is our hope that we can have Soldiers' Angels go first, followed by our Paralyzed Veterans, and then the PGR's to acknowledge our Fallen Heroes." What makes this a non-mission mission is that we will not be assigning a ride captain to this event and we are not classifying it as an official PGR mission. (More info. about the parade itself can be found here - http://www.cor.net/SantasParade.aspx?id=7900) I need a volunteer to step up and be the point person, though, and contact Soldier's Angels to determine where to stage and other such details. It should be a good time with much cooler weather than those 4th of July parades. If such a volunteer will drop me an e-mail at pgrlucas at charter.net I will give you the name and phone number for our contact person at Soldier's Angels. I will also be happy to post all of the relevant information in this forum for all who would like to ride in the parade. It's also a good chance to get to see Santa one-on-one and get your list in early. Everyone would like to see a little new chrome and leather under the tree this year, not to mention those fancy electric/heated jacket and pants liners that Walter (Boats) loves so much. When we have our point man/woman I'll let you know and we'll go from there. Thanks, everyone. You folks are terrific!! We've already had a volunteer step up to be our point man for the parade and he's been given the contact information for the Soldier's Angels people. His name is Jake Jakubowski. I know we'll be hearing back from them soon. Stay tuned for the parade staging details and let's go and have a good time, show the people who the PGR is and enjoy the day. On this day of Thanksgiving, one of the many things I have to be thankful for is you, the men, women and children of the PGR. Each of you are very special individuals. Your actions come from a devotion and dedication that is generated from deep within. You are steadfast, caring and strong and at the same time good natured, friendly and willing to donate your time and personal resources, not only to the mission but to your PGR compatriots when necessary. As individuals you are wonderful. As a group you are impressive, formidable and provide a feeling of great pride and patriotism, not to mention great comfort to the families we serve. I am thankful this and every day that you are who you are and that you have banded together for such a great cause. Thank you. I know that we usually don't make plans in that manner but if you know you're going to make the parade please contact Jake at rev.jake at verizon.net by end of business on Monday. This does not mean that you can't be in the parade if you decide later in the week that you want to go. Please feel free to roll in at the staging area and join the party. Let's help Soldier's Angels give the city a number if we can and help our hosts (Soldier's Angels) out. Soldier's Angels are VERY excited about PGR being there in any strength we can muster.
