When the service begins we will break down the flag line and prepare for the escort to DFW National Cemetery for the Interment Service. DFW National Cemetery 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway Dallas, TX 75211 214-467-3374 Map - http://tinyurl.com/n53s9e On arrival at the cemetery big flag bikes will remain with the procession, the rest of the bikes will proceed to the shelter staging area. The shelter assignment is unknown at this time. Those not participating in the escort please plan to arrive at the cemetery no later than 12:30 PM. You can check at the administration building or at the visitor center for the shelter assignment. We will use the flags in storage at the shelter for this part of the service. Please be aware of the possibility of blocked entrances to the cemetery. An entrance that we believe will always be open is the one near the administration building on Mountain Creek Parkway about half way up the hill, approaching Spur 408 and Loop 12. The Map in this document shows that entrance and not the main entrance we are used to - just in case. Note: Please remember that our parking area is now on the main road between shelters A and B. Funerals are being staged at the administration building and in the area by the lake. We will park facing up the hill toward shelter A with 2 bikes side by side (parallel parked) as close to the curb and each other as possible so that traffic can get by. This arrangement keeps the motorcycle and voice noise to a minimum around the shelters during the services and appears to meet the needs of the cemetery. We will assemble in this area and not around the shelters until it is time to move to the shelter to set up for the service. Exceptions to this parking arrangement are, as always, made for those who have trouble walking to the area. Weather: Forecast for Thursday is for a high of 91 degrees with an isolated thunderstorm. Projected weather forecast (according to weather.com) for Tuesday is for mostly sunny with a high of 90 degrees. The flag/water truck will be at all locations. Safety First: With warmer weather, please remember to properly hydrate (including the night before) before any outdoor activity and to dress appropriately. Do not hesitate to take a break at any time if you feel you need to get in the shade or get indoors and always ask for help at any time. Also please do not forget your sun screen. Iron horses if you can, cages are always welcome and appreciated. Please remember that our mission is to stand tall, silent, and with honor and respect for Walter and his family. Many of you remember our recent mission to escort Brett Wolf to the site of his new home, provided by Homes For Our Troops. Homes For Our Troops is having an event at Beaumont Ranch, just off of I-35W, south of Burleson on September 12 and we have been asked to once again escort Brett and several other disabled veterans as they arrive at this event. The primary event is a Sporting Clays shooting tournament but in addition, Dana Bowman, Retired US Army Golden Knight parachutist who lost both of his legs in a parachuting accident will be parachuting in and speaking, there will be WWII and Civil War reenactors present, a mounted riding team, David Hall and the Liberty Bell, and other activities. We will escort Brett and the other disabled veterans from Alvarado to Beaumont Ranch on Saturday morning. The exact time for this event has not yet been determined. It depends on what time Specialist Wolf and the other veterans want to get to the event, but it is believed that we will leave Alvarado no later than 10AM and possibly earlier. A flyer for the event is at the end of this e-mail. The second part of the mission takes place following a short ride to Burleson. We will ride down Hwy 174 (Wilshire Boulevard) in Burleson and open the 3rd Annual Patriotic American Outreach event being hosted by the Circuit Riders Motorcycle Ministry. The opening ceremony for this event is at noon, so the ride will start shortly before then. A flyer for that event is also at the bottom of this e-mail. The organizers of both of these events have invited our riders to spend the day at these events and enjoy the day. Planning is underway already for our participation and final details will be forthcoming in a final itinerary. Our official duties should be completed shortly after noon. Again, the flyers for these events are below. Thank you all for what you do every day to honor those we serve. We received the following information from Panhandle Deputy State Captain David "Grinch" Griminger just a few moments ago regarding a PGR rider in that area. To the Panhandle/South Plains region of the Texas PGR. Our PGR brother, Bill Hetzler, 52, of Amarillo, was killed last nite in a cage vs bike accident in Amarillo. According to news release, vehicle pulled out in front of Bill, causing the accident, it was reported that Bill was not wearing a helmet. Dennis Antel Amarillo ride Capt, will do recon on 09/10/2009 in an attempt to find out if the PGR will be able to stand for Bill. More will be emailed out as soon as details are available. Please remember this family in your own way during this difficult time. Steve has been there to help each of us; his dedication to duty has been nothing short of exemplary. His unwavering commitment to a higher standard of excellence has been a shining example to us all. His loyalty and perseverance have been the guiding hand behind the North Texas Patriot Guard for the last year. His management skills, communication and direction have shown the way for the North Texas PGR to be accepted and appreciated within the community. Steve has agreed to lend his expertise to the NTPGR and serve in a new capacity as Chief Ride Captain. He will be keeping all the Ride Captains abreast of any changes or updates and will also serve as the liaison person on my behalf with major events such as Snowball Express, Medal of Honor, etc., and perform any tasks usually associated with a position of Chief Ride Captain. I have many duties in store for him and I ask that everyone give him your full support because I know he will continue to give his full support to the PGR. After several discussions with State Captain Lou Freitas and others, I have accepted the Deputy State Captain position. It isn't difficult to recognize the fact that I will be following a strong leader and that I will have a big set of shoes to fill. No one likes to be the follow up to a premier act, however I feel confident that with help from Steve, Lou, the Ride Captains and the expertise within the ranks of the membership we can do this job. I am not saying that I won't stumble along the way but with your help I promise I will pick myself up, dust myself off and go again. One major determining factor in my accepting this position is that each time I have thought the Patriot Guard could not do better, you have stepped up and raised the bar. I am extremely proud each time I stand a flag line with you. Each one of you are the Patriot Guard and it is an honor to be associated with you. I am here to serve each of you. If you feel something is not working or you feel there is a problem, write it down. Also write what you think the answer would be and get it to me. If I don't know it's broke I can't fix it! This organization can only work when we all pull in the same direction. I look forward to helping each of you honor the veterans, their families and their communities. For those of you who were around and present almost a year ago this video will reacquaint you with the fallen from North Texas and introduce you to the other 4 gallant men who lost their lives so far away. For those of you who weren't with us when we met those men at the airports, escorted them to their destinations, stood at three funerals and grieved for these men over those many days this will introduce you to them and let you see who it is you will be working to honor on Sunday. I know that for all of us those men and their families are never far away from us and will always be in our hearts. Seeing this video certainly brought back very clearly the memories of those missions, including the sight of the airplane touching down and that Texas flag flying proudly from atop the plane as it taxied to where the family patiently awaited the precious cargo. We will roll on Sunday, rain or shine, as all of these families gather at one place to honor their heroes. The 2-149th will be there with them this time and they will all have a chance to grieve together as their comrades and loved ones are placed in the earth as one. When they thought of who would lead them on this journey they thought of us, the Patriot Guard. It is we who will be in the front of the procession and taking these heroes home. Right behind us is the coach and then the family cars. The families and their military family have given us an honor almost too great to describe. We will live up to what General Oates said about us when he said we are "Always There". Please watch the video and listen to the words of the song. I know I can speak for the mission Ride Captains when I say that we look forward to seeing you on Sunday. http://photopeach.com/album/x9v6w3?ref=more Thank you all. Not too long ago a group of PGR riders escorted troops from Arkansas to Fort Hood for deployment. It was a long ride. Along the way they ran into, and through, some pretty serious rain. There are three messages addressed to those riders below from three of those deployed troops. I think you may find the first particularly moving.the one from SPC "Ryan". We may all know what the riders were thinking on that long ride, and especially when they were riding in the heavy rain. We've all thought the same things. SPC "Ryan", however, was seeing things from a different perspective. SPC "Ryan" was seeing things from where he/she was in his/her own life and what was going on at that particular moment in that world. A world we can't possibly see into or know about. SPC "Ryan" chooses to share a little of that world with us in the letter you are about to read. You have heard many times from the Ride Captains in North Texas that it is the riders who make up the PGR and that without the riders, the PGR would cease to exist. That is very, very true. And without the Ride Captains, may I say, we'd all just be standing around in a parking lot somewhere looking for a place to go and not knowing what to do when we got there. If you don't think you're important, that maybe it's not worth it when you're melting into the pavement, shivering in the cold, dodging the driver who insists on driving through the middle of the procession or wondering if the family even knows that we're there, stop and think a minute about SPC "Ryan".a real, live person that you're about to meet. SPC "Ryan" is out there deployed somewhere right now. Dear Patriot Guard Riders, I cannot express how deeply moved I was to see such patriotism in an individual as all of you so proudly did. I am 22, I'm from Gulfport, Mississippi and I volunteered for this deployment because of a lack of options in my life. I messed up in college, I was fired from my job, and my family was on the verge of complete utter dbut isappointment - which I cannot allow. They did not want me to deploy but in my stubburness, here I am. This is not an e-mail for you to feel sorry for me. On the contrary, all of you have instilled within me a purpose and mindset that I need to do my job make it back in one piece to my family and this great country full of people like yourselves; a pride in myself and brothers in arms that is unwaivering and has prepared me for my trials ahead; a humility that has taken my frame of mind outside myself and my own problems and needs up to a level of awareness that exceeds my selfishness for the benefits of this deployment to a much greater cause: getting our troops and loved ones back home and protect the freedoms of Americans. Reading the letter from CPT Wilkerson and the ever supportive and uplifting responses you all sent back made my eyes water endlessly. Even now as I type this I can barely see the screen. I feel as though I am utterly undeserving to be escorted by such fine examples of American Patriots, and have marked for myself examples of true heroes. In my life, I've never felt more humbled than to be in the presence of such an action as simple as riding along side us, or in front. Even still the hardship and danger of riding in the rain as yall did, I feel undeserving. I hope to return home worthy of supporters such as yourselves. I am truly honored to have met the few of you I did. You have inadvertantly influenced me to become a better soldier, leader, and, more importantly, American. By your example, inspiration, and impact made to my heart and soul, I feel as though a simple "Thank you" is not enough. I hereby promise you that I will meet the expectations that you hold for an American Soldier, I will perform in my actions the selfless service very simliar to the example I bore witness of you extraordinary people, I will ensure with my life that the freedoms you hold dear will be protected above my abilities, I will do all that is necessary to protect the man or woman next to me so that they will make it home to their loved ones, and that I will not fail the expectations the American people have for me, I will not fail my leaders, and I will not fail myself. Even though I don't know you, from the bottom of my heart, my appreciation, respect, and love for each one of you cannot be expressed. Your actions, however small to you, were so much greater for me. I hate sounding so repetative, I'm trying to stay as formal as possible, but reflecting on that day, seeing people take the time to put a banner over an overpass with people waving, and all of you riding with us, to steal Captain Wilkerson's words, I've never been more proud of myself. You really put me at peace of mind. Well, I don't want to come off too much of a kiss ass so I'll stop here. I just really wanted you all to know that you made an impact in my life and that I don't want to waste it. With love, SPC "Ryan" 90th Sustainment Brigade FROM CPT KRISTEN On behalf of the Soldiers and Command Group of the 90th Sustainment Brigade, I want to sincerely thank the Patriot Guard Riders who escorted us from Little Rock to Ft. Hood, Texas. Their actions truly define the Army value of selfless service. Most Soldiers had no idea we were receiving escorts from local law enforcement, much less the Patriot Guard Riders, so their accompaniment could only be described by some as `very cool.' I think for the Soldiers and family members alike, there was an almost indescribable feeling inside of pride, respect, gratitude, and awe (especially during the rainstorm!) "This team of volunteers made me proud to be an American, a Soldier, and to serve on this mission. It's incredible that they paid their respect to Soldiers they don't even know because they know we're protecting the freedoms of America." - Major Brian Burkett, Special Troops Battalion, Battalion Commander I spoke briefly with Don Nix and his group at our Texarkana lunch break, and they repeatedly thanked us for our willingness to serve and deploy. For a Soldier, the words `Thank you for your service' reach the bottom of the heart, but the Patriot Guard's actions filled our hearts with a feeling of patriotism unlike any other. There is an unwavering pride in being an American Soldier, and the Patriot Guard Riders instilled a greater dedication to serve the American people. We cannot say `Thank You' enough to the Patriot Guard Riders. If possible, could you please send the names and addresses of all Patriot Guard Riders who participated in this escort mission to Sincerely, CPT Kristin Wilkerson Public Affairs Officer 90th Sustainment Brigade -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Mike asked me to keep the ball rolling while he?s out of town for a few days and an event has come to our attention that I thought you would like to know about. On July 19, 2009, in Anbar Province, Iraq, Marine Lance Corporal Brandon T. Lara was killed in action. Brandon lived in New Braunfels with his dad and step-mom and siblings and he was buried in San Antonio at the National Cemetery. The Patriot Guard was present and, I understand, it was a beautiful tribute to this American hero. Lance Corporal Lara?s mother, Shannon Martin, lives in Lewisville. Mr. Monty Slough, the founder of the Denton County Fallen Soldier Memorial, contacted us and told us that the city of Lewisville is planning on presenting a proclamation to Ms. Martin this Monday night at 7:00 PM at Lewisville city hall. Also present will be the Military Order of the Purple Heart to make a presentation. Mr. Slough says there will be Gold Star families in attendance and others and that he asked the city manager if the PGR could also attend. He reports that the city manager was very excited about having anyone from the PGR who could make it to please turn out for the event. It is as of yet uncertain but it is possible that the PGR may be able to make a presentation to Ms. Martin on behalf of the riders from North Texas in honor of her son. While this will not be a formal mission with a ride captain assigned, and Lance Corporal Lara has already been laid to rest in another part of the state, when the opportunity arises to honor an American Patriot in this manner and a Gold Star mom here in North Texas, I think it may be well within our mission statement to be always there. Again, this is Monday night, September 21, 2009 at 7:00 PM at Lewisville City Hall. It is my understanding that there is a memorial location inside city hall and the ceremony may be held there. Best guess is to arrive early and head for the front door. Lewisville City Hall 151 W. Church St. Lewisville, TX 75057 972-219-3400 map - http://tinyurl.com/lvj5md Below is an article written about Lance Corporal Lara at the time of his death. Thank you all for what you do every day for the fallen and their families. Steve Lucas Chief Ride Captain North Texas PGR Web Posted: 07/28/2009 12:00 CDT A Marine to the bitter end By Sig Christenson - Express-News Lance Cpl. Brandon T. Lara was in such a hurry to become a Marine that he graduated early from New Braunfels' Canyon High School. A few weeks after turning 18 on Oct. 7, 2006, Lara traded his diploma and a bedroom dotted with Marine Corps posters for the rigors of basic training and the chance to at last live the dream. He didn't even stick around town for Thanksgiving or Christmas, as his dad wished. It was time to be a Marine. ?Since he was a little boy, that's all he talked about, joining the Marines,? his father, Jacob Lara Jr., said, adding that he wasn't quite sure why the young man wanted to serve in the corps. ?I know he had an uncle on his mother's side that was a Marine and I think the whole uniform, as nice as it looks ? his dress blues ? and just the respect and honor that are given the Marines, he just wouldn't choose any other branch.? The dream ended on a mission just over a week ago in Anbar province, when Lara, 20, of New Braunfels was killed in combat. As his family mourned over the weekend, those in the San Antonio area closed ranks. They lined the streets of Randolph AFB after Lara's body was flown here Sunday from Dover AFB, Del., holding flags and banners celebrating his service. They were back again Monday, standing at roadside rest stops and overpasses on Interstate 35 as the Lara funeral procession headed toward Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Some waved flags. Others held their hands over their hearts. ?I don't know how many flags they had out there,? said Lara's father, a 37-year-old fire extinguisher technician living in Seguin. ?It seems like hundreds of them.? In California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered flags at the capitol flown at half-staff in honor of Lara, who served with the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. He praised Lara as a ?brave Marine who sacrificed his life fighting for the freedoms that are dear to this country,? and ?fought with honor and courage.? The somber farewell was in keeping with the younger Lara's state of mind. This was his second tour of Iraq since 2007, and there were signs that he was changing. A quiet boy who could be a jokester and a prankster, Lara had evolved from listening to hard rock to Christian rock and rap. Just what caused that isn't clear, but his father and brother said they saw it happening. ?He was a changing a lot,? said Jonathon Lara, a 17-year-old junior at Victory Academy, a private school in Seguin. ?Just like talking with him you'd notice a difference.? As kids, Jonathon Lara said that his older brother ?tricked me into trading one of my Pok?mon cards, like my best one for a regular one.? Over time, though, Brandon Lara grew serious, working part-time fast food jobs and playing baseball at Canyon High School. ?Growing up, Brandon was quiet, but he had just this personality about himself that would attract people to him,? said Jacob Lara, his dad. ?You wanted to be his friend. He could make you laugh. When you tell your friend, ?I have your back,' Brandon truly meant that. If you were his friend, he was there for you. And perhaps that's why he went into the Marines.? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
